Negative perceptions about plus-size people often stem from long-standing stereotypes and media messages that unfairly link larger bodies with laziness or poor self-control. These misunderstandings influence how society treats plus-size individuals, resulting in frequent unfair judgment and discrimination (Psychology Today, 2023).
In the Philippines, mental health remains a sensitive subject, often surrounded by shame and misunderstanding. For plus-size Filipinos, it becomes even harder due to combined stigma around body size and mental well-being. Casual comments about weight, even when seemingly harmless, can deeply undermine confidence, especially for young people grappling with strict beauty ideals.
Research indicates that more than half of Filipinos aged 18 to 24 experience anxiety or depression linked to body image issues. This pressure is intensified by society’s tendency to equate larger body sizes with personal failings, fueling feelings of low self-worth and mental health struggles .
Healthcare environments can also be unwelcoming. Many healthcare workers focus heavily on weight as a cause of health problems, often neglecting other symptoms. This weight bias discourages individuals from seeking help, worsening their physical and mental health outcomes.
Cultural attitudes like hiya (shame) and bahala na (fatalism) often stop Filipinos from openly discussing mental health or reaching out for care. Although the Mental Health Act of 2018 has made services more accessible, many still face stigma and resource gaps.
Fortunately, local advocates and groups are working hard to change this, providing safe and inclusive spaces where all body types are accepted and mental health support is accessible. Mental health care should be free of judgment and bias. Every Filipino deserves compassionate treatment, respect, and support, regardless of body size.
