In the Philippines, people in larger bodies often face extra emotional burdens due to unrealistic beauty standards, judgment, and limited representation. Although mental health awareness has grown, plus-size individuals are still frequently left out of the conversation. Thankfully, several advocacy groups across the country are working to change that—by offering safe, respectful, and welcoming spaces for all.
Here are some organizations leading the way:
- #MentalHealthPH
This nationwide group promotes open discussions about mental health through storytelling campaigns like #UsapTayo. They also operate a 24/7 hotline to support anyone going through emotional distress.
- Heads Up PH – Unilab Foundation
Focused on early mental health care, this program equips teachers and students with practical tools to recognize emotional struggles in school settings. Their initiatives encourage a healthier, stigma-free learning environment.
- Usapang Isipan – Phi Kappa Mu
This student-driven campaign partners with PGH’s psychiatry experts to hold webinars and peer-support workshops. It aims to normalize mental health conversations among the youth.
- Flourish Circle – LoveYourself Inc.
These support circles offer guided group sessions for individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, and personal trauma. Led by trained facilitators, each session provides a non-judgmental space to heal.
- Youth for Mental Health Coalition (Y4MH)
Y4MH brings students together to advocate for stronger mental health policies and services in schools, communities, and government programs.
- Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA)
With a long history of service, PMHA offers professional counseling, seminars, and outreach focused on accessible, respectful mental health care for all.
These advocates prove that mental health support should meet people where they are, without judgment, shame, or weight bias. Their ongoing efforts remind us that mental well-being is a right, not a privilege. By fostering inclusive spaces, they inspire hope and healing for every Filipino, regardless of shape or size.
